The European Saudi Organization for Human Rights participated in the opening session of the regional congress on the death penalty in the Middle East held by the ECPM organization in Jordan on July 11 and 12, 2023.
The Senior researcher of the organization, Duaa Dhainy, indicated that during the past months, she participated in the sessions of the academic committee of the conference. She explained that after the World Congress organized by ECPM in Berlin last November, which included a workshop on the issue of execution in the Middle East and the establishment of a regional conference on that, work began on the success of a conference on a sensitive topic in a sensitive area.
Dhainy emphasized that the Academic Committee was established with six members, including activists, lawyers, and academics, to determine the directions and priorities of the conference's academic program. The committee's role is to identify priority issues, plan conference sessions, and select speakers. Several sessions were held to discuss the conference's significance, taking into account the concerns of activists and the expected outcomes.
The statement highlighted that the seminars, workshops, and roundtable discussions, alongside side discussions and networking, all share one goal: reducing the use of the death penalty in the Middle East and the world. This will be achieved through sharing and analyzing data, information, and documents, as well as discussing possible actions and generating recommendations.
The statement concluded with the hope that this conference will be a significant milestone in our collective efforts towards ending the death penalty.
