Norway called on Saudi Arabia to give its citizens the right to express opinions and communicate.
During the discussions of the fourth item of the 52nd session of the Council in Geneva, on 22 March 2023, the representative of Norway, Tina Mosch Smith, indicated that civic space in the world is shrinking, and she explained that more than 85 percent of the world's population lives in countries that are considered repressed or closed.
Saudi Arabia had escalated its violations on the background of expressing opinion, and had issued sentences of up to 90 years for activists on charges related to tweeting, including Salma Al-Shehab and Noura Al-Qahtani.
